Very sad news today. Jane Jacobs has died at 89, apparently due to a stroke. The world has lost one of its greatest citizens. The American-born activist, writer, and urban expert has lived in Canada (Toronto) since 1968.

Her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961) is one of the seminal texts of the twentieth-century.

Edit: Christopher Hume did a nice piece in the Star today.

CBC acknowleged her death on the National news tonight. They showed an interview with Hannah Gartner, (I think,) and Jane said the media reports things “superficially”.

I felt so terrific hearing that said….

Of course, how many people, now, here, care that this is what shapes public opinion for the vast majority of citizens in a given democracy -and it should be talked about more!

The work of Jane Jacobs will carry on…
