LIBERAL LEADERSHIP 2006 HOMEPAGE | DELEGATE RESULTS | BLOG ENTRIES

Here are the total fundraising numbers for each of the remaining 8 Liberal leadership candidates — given are total money raised, the number of donors, the average donation, the number of elected delegates and the amount raised per delegate. This reflects all contributions reported for the second and third quarters of 2006. Overall 4928 donors gave $3.235 million, for an average donation of $656.

Update: I have added complete PDF lists of each candidate’s donations (just click the candidates name below.

CANDIDATE RAISED DONORS AVG DONATION DELEGATES $/DELEGATE
IGNATIEFF $900,614 1628 $553 1309 $688
RAE $843,861 638 $1,323 881 $958
KENNEDY $369,038 458 $806 751 $491
DION $236,237 661 $357 694 $340
VOLPE $210,235 194 $1,084 211 $996
DRYDEN $170,373 403 $423 187 $911
BRISON $258,622 434 $596 153 $1,690
HALL FINDLAY $107,086 289 $371 38 $2,818

Important Note: Number of Donors above is the actual number of people who donated, not the number of total donations (i.e. some people donate more than once)

Stephane Dion got the biggest bang for the buck — delivering 694 delegates despite a signficant handicap in fundraising (a silly but interesting metric here is the dollars per delegate; for Dion this is $340). Gerard Kennedy was second in bang for the buck at $491 per delegate. Ignatieff was third with $658, while Bob Rae had $958 per delegate.

I see that Gerard Kennedy has a lot of Kennedys on his list. Bob Rae has a lot of Sorbaras on his list. Stephane Dion, where is your big family support!?

Stephane Dion represents me in my riding of St-Laurent. Stephane Dion has his greatest support, outside of his own riding and outside of Quebec…

It would be a huge mistake for anyone living west of Quebec to hope that M. Dion wins. It would be extremely unlikely that the Liberals could pick up some of the Bloc votes with Stephane Dion for PM… He will never be popular enough in Quebec to ever close the doors against sovereignty.

But even worse, if he were to win on a later ballot, it would be worse for all of us. It would mean, a next election with Harper having enough seats to really incite insurrection under the Canadian flag, without ever meaning to do this? I wonder!

What I find interesting is the very strong correlation between the number of donors and the number of delegates. Aside from MHF, the donor-to-delegate ratio only varies from 0.6 to 2.8, and most are right around 1.

Actually, if you exclude the bottom three, the range tightens up from 0.6 to 1.24.

I think the most interesting stat there is the donor-donation ratio. Rae in fact had by far the largest donor-donation average ($1323) with over twice the average ($656).

Without having done a donor by donor analysis, it seems to reflect my analysis of the first fundraising reports: Rae is relying mostly on big donations presumably from “elites”; Iggy is relying on widespread support from all regions and from elites and grassroots with by far the largest number of small donation amounts; Kennedy has surprised me greatly with his high donation average; and Dion is lower but with such low overall numbers I’m not sure how good or bad that reflects.

In this analysis, only Volpe and Rae have been overly reliant on fewer bigger donors. Only Volpe, Rae and Kennedy are above average in this regard.

If the new fundraising regime is implemented and candidates are limited to $1000, we need to change our fundraising approach. New school vs. Old School.

Louise M should get her facts straight before commenting. I wish we all had MPs like Dion.

Dear misguided Louise here’s some statistics for you my dear:
* amongst Liberal delegates, Dion is only second to Michael Ignatieff in Quebec.
* per the latest EKOS poll, Dion is the second pick of all candidates delegates – with the slight exception of Volpe.

When this period of reporting came out, these were the results that I remember Liberal pebbles did

Dear Westmount Liberal –

Louise was only talking about Dion’s popularity among the electorate, not among delegates. Louise’s point was to compare the ELECTORAL prospects (in Quebec) of each leadership candidate, and Dion’s likely effectiveness during another secession referendum.

Delegates’ opinions are interesting, but they don’t tell us much about the opinions of the country at large.

P.S., I am not a supporter of the Liberal Party, but of all the candidates, I personally prefer Dion.
