I don't know the best way to beat McCain and I've only know past policy positions of Gore, Clinton and Edwards.
If 2012 is taken in account for the standard-of-living of the USA, the most likely deficiency will require an economics or a health care background. I don't even know the basic duties of a VP.

How has no one mentioned John Edwards yet? Him leaving the race was the only reason the white-working class/rural dem. vote coalesced around Clinton... cause edwards was no longer an option.

Prediction time. For Obama, the running mate will be white and male. Otherwise, white males will feel left out. For McCain, it will be anyone: white or black, male or female.

Jim Webb is among my favourites. Others Obama should consider include people who have been Clinton supporters in an attempt to bridge the two camps. I would go with either Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania or Sen. Chuck Schumer from New York.

If Obama goes with a woman as a running mate, Sebelius is by far the best choice. If he's looking for a Clinton supporter, I'd go with Dianne Feinstein.

As far as Webb's negatives, I think one of them really isn't. The GOP can't claim the moral high ground about sexually explicit material -- after all many porn stars are Republicans and even Lynne Cheney has written some pretty steamy materials.

Sorry, Greg.

Must have confused the Arizona governor with the lead singer of Concrete Blonde. Remember them?

I think the general feeling among Clinton supporters is that they would be pretty upset if Obama picked a female other than Hillary. FYI, it's Janet Napolitano, not Joanne.

These are my three choices. To unite the party, I would prefer a woman in the post of VP. My picks:

1) Kathleen Sebelius - A centrist Democrat governor in a red state. Dems need to win Kansas to undermine the McCain challenge.

2) Joanne Napolitano - Another centrist Democrat who is popular with the demographic Obama needs to consolidate ie. Hispanics and Asian Americans. May swing a state meant for McCain to the Dems.

3)Claire McCaskill - The closest to the next female American President with Hillary out of the way. A Catholic who has taken a stand for stem-cell research. Would prefer that she build her profile in the Senate, but could be more of an Al Gore type VP. Another swing state Democrat.

About Jim Webb, don't forget Tom Kaine. I think Kaine is popular enough with Reagan Democrats to hold his own.
