Last Friday the Burlington NDP nominated Cory Judson, a respected public school teacher and energetic volunteer with youth, sports, and community organizations.

With women running for the Liberals and Tories in this riding, it would be another step to having more women in Ontario politics.

The map above is not the map under which this by-election is taking place — the by-election is conducted under those boundaries in place at the time of the 2003 election, not the ones to be in place for the 2007 election. This applies to all three maps, FYI. The correct neighbouring riding name is not “Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale”, but “Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Aldershot” — Aldershot being part of the new Burlington riding, but not part of the old one under which this by-election is being contested.

me - you’re right about the Burlington map — I had the wrong one coded. It’s changed now. The other two maps are correct (FYI, York South-Weston did not have any changes when moving from 103 to 107 ridings).

We need more New Democrats in the Legislature because the two CORPORATE AGENDA CONSERVATIVE parties of Dalton McHarris and John Tory are not up for the job(NOT yesterday NOT today and NOT tomorrow) and NDP Howard Hampton will make excellent Premier and Ontario will be better off (YESTERDAY TODAY and TOMORROW)VOTE NDP/NPD www.ndp.ca www.ontariondp.com

Comment/commentaire by genesio 01.20.07 @ 6:20 pm

I’ll pass genesio… I’m the farthest from a socialist you can possibly get! I’m voting Green like I did in the past 2 elections… FCP in the 03′ election though.
Predictions:
pc - 44%
lib - 42%
ndp - 9%
Green - 5%

Comment/commentaire by Mark-Jimga Johanahew 01.22.07 @ 3:44 pm

This should be a not-too-difficult PC hold. The Liberals would be competitive in the right environment, but they’re not as popular as they were in 2003. There’ll be a lot of tactical unwind to the NDP and Greens from the Liberals.

Savoline(PC): 47%
Lougheed(LIB): 36%
Judson(NDP): 10%
???(GRN): 7%

Comment/commentaire by Tom 01.23.07 @ 2:06 pm

These 2003 results are very deceiving, in terms of predictions.

Last year with an extremely limited budget and resources, David Larid received more than DOUBLE the number of votes he got in 2003.

This time around, with a much stronger and focused campaign, coupled with the recent momentum of the Ontario NDP, Cory Judson stands to make this by-election a very interesting one and to turn some heads doing it.

Savoline(PC): 39%
Lougheed(LIB): 36%
Judson(NDP): 21%
……(GRN): 4%

The Green candidate will be:

Frank De jong

Comment/commentaire by Mark-Jimga Johanahew 01.25.07 @ 5:31 pm

Aaron, that says to me that Larid was a good candidate (like, say, Peggy Nash), not that the NDP has a lot of potential in this riding. I’m all for more third party representation, but this is not a seat the NDP can win.

On February 8, 2007: Vote Green!

The Green Party of Ontario (Burlington) members have chosen Frank de Jong, Leader of the Green Party of Ontario, to be their candidate in the upcoming provincial by-election. De Jong was acclaimed at the founding meeting of the Constituency Association (CA) meeting held January 23 in Burlington.

The local Green Party members voted in favour of creating a Constituency Association to prepare for future elections and to engage the public to examine the Green Party’s Values and philosophy as we move towards electing Green MPPs to Queen’s Park. Ann Ritchie was elected as CA president, and Lawson Hunter the CA’s CFO.

Frank de Jong lives in Toronto, is a school teacher, and has been the Leader of the Green Party of Ontario since 1993.

The Burlington riding association felt that choosing Frank to run as a candidate at this time will bring media profile to Burlington issues and attract more members and supporters to the Green Party. Once the by-election is over, the Burlington Greens will focus their attention on the Oct. 4 election. Their next monthly meeting will be held on March 3 at 10:30am at a location to be determined.

“Burlington deserves to have the ability to vote for a Green Party candidate,” said de Jong. “My running as the Burlington candidate will take some of the pressure off of local potential candidates to run two campaigns in the span of eight months. I felt a great rush of support for the Green Party at Tuesday night’s meeting and see great things happening with the Green Party in Burlington.”

Burlington By-Election Candidates debate

Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital receives $215 per person less in provincial funding than other hospitals in Toronto, or London or Ottawa and is long-overdue for redevelopment.

Burlington’s adult and children’s social service agencies receive $181 less per person.

The same is true of every other GTA/905 community in Halton, Durham, Peel and York.

This is because Burlington and other GTA/905 communities are growing faster than any other place in Ontario and Provincial Funding is not keeping pace with the growth.

• You can wait longer for hospital care.

• You have less access to social services.

• Your community is less attractive to investors.

Make Fair Share of Provincial Health Care Funding the Central Issue in Markham and Burlington By-Elections, GTA/905 Healthcare Alliance Urges

Toronto: Voters in Burlington and Markham should support candidates in provincial MPP by-election who will fight to reverse the growing inequity in funding for their local hospitals that is forcing residents to seek hospital care further from home, according to the Chair of the GTA/905 Healthcare Alliance.

“Residents in Burlington and Markham have an opportunity to improve their local access to hospital care by making the under funding of local health care services a central issue of the campaign”, said Kirk Corkery, Chair of the GTA/905 Healthcare Alliance. “The Alliance has been working to correct this funding inequity. Unless we all call for a fair share of the provincial hospital and health resources the funding gap in Burlington and Markham will continue to widen. That will mean residents will not get timely local access to required hospital care they need”.

A recent report by PricewaterhouseCoopers identifies an $877 million gap in annual funding for hospital care in the high growth regions of Durham, Halton, Peel and York. The large gap in annual operating funding results from the GTA/905 residents receiving $215 less per resident for hospital care compared to the average Ontarian.

“I urge voters in Burlington and in Markham to insist that candidates in the by-election commit to ensuring that their local hospitals receive a fair share of provincial hospital funding,” Corkery said. He also asked voters to support candidates who commit to fighting for additional hospital capacity in their communities and adequate funding of the smaller, local sites of multi-site hospitals.

“This is an opportunity for residents in Burlington and Markham to choose an MPP who will fight to improve their local access to hospital and other health care services”, Corkery said. “Under funding has a huge impact on local access to hospital services. It means that the residents of Burlington and Markham can wait longer for hospital care and are more likely to be forced to by-pass their local hospital and seek care further from home”.

The GTA/905 Healthcare Alliance has been calling on the Ontario Government to improve local access to hospital care and to address the hospital and health care funding inequities in Burlington and Markham and the rest of the GTA/905 by:

1. Providing an immediate and adequate “growth funding” for hospitals serving the residents of the high growth regions of the GTA/905 including Burlington and Markham.

2. Revising provincial funding formulas to fund health services on the basis of population size and characteristics; and

3. Bringing forward a Provincial Health Care Strategy for Ontario’s High Growth Regions that will complement Places to Grow and offer an effective growth plan for Ontario’s high growth communities over the next 30 years.

In an acknowledgement of the funding gap, the Provincial Government allocated an additional $24 million in hospital growth funding last fall to help GTA/905 hospitals deal with pressures from population growth.

“The additional growth funding is a step in the right direction and a clear acknowledgement of the need for growth funding for high growth hospitals. But $24 million to meet the needs of more than three million GTA/905 residents is far from adequate. The province has a long way to go when you’re talking about an $800 million shortfall,” said Tariq Asmi, Executive Director of the GTA/905 Healthcare Alliance.

The GTA/905 Healthcare Alliance is the collective voice of acute care and mental health hospitals across the GTA/905 region – from Oshawa to Burlington and north to Newmarket. Alliance hospitals provide care in communities representing more than 25 per cent of Ontario’s population. The GTA/905 area is the fastest growing region in Ontario, accounting for more than half of Ontario’s annual population growth. The Alliance represents the three million residents in the GTA/905 regions to ensure that they get better care close to home.

I would be shocked if this riding did not return a conservative.

That being said I wouldn’t be surprised if the Green Party got support in the double-digits on election day.

OJ, glad your over optimistic for the greens, however lets consider that the gpo isn’t as popular as the gpc for some stupid old reason. 6-7% would be a good showing. De jong knows how to rake in the votes
