the candidates have been announced. It is Michael Chan for the Liberals. His site is
http://www.votemichaelchan.ca

This is going to be a tough race, but I think Mike has an edge as we go into campaign mode.

Bernadette Manning will be the candidate for the Green party.

ALex Yuan will be running for John Tory and the Progressive Conservatives.

Alex Yuan founded A&L Computer Software Ltd. in 1982 and has been responsible for the companys successful growth as a leading medical software development company in Ontario. He has worked closely with the Ontario Medical Association, keymedical laboratories and the Ontario Ministry of Health and has developed product lines that have direct applications in the medical market in Ontario. A&L Medical System and Document Console are two of his leading products.

This will be a close race!

Janice Hagan (NDP) 4.3%
Bernadette Manning (GREEN) 1.3%
Alex Yuan (PC) 43%
Michael Chan (LIB) 45%

Comment/commentaire by Democratic Space 01.20.07 @ 12:28 pm

I’ll give a similar prediction.

Chan(LIB): 46%
Yuan(PC): 45%
Hagan(NDP): 6%
Manning(GRN): 3%

The PCs will strive mightily to regain the seat, but I don’t think the Liberals are unpopular enough for them to quite succeed. Some tactical unwind boosts both the NDP and Greens.

Comment/commentaire by Tom 01.20.07 @ 2:19 pm

New numbers in today!

Michael Chan (LIB) 45%
Janice Hagan (NDP) 5.6%
Bernadette Manning (GREEN) 2.2%
Alex Yuan (PC) 44.5%

Notes:

The gap is closing. Margin of error leaves virtual tie.

The survey also asked if constituents had a favourable opinion of the party leaders

Hampton: 23% very favourable or favourable
McGuinty 39% very favourable or favourable
Tory: 46% very favourable or favourable

Comment/commentaire by Anonymous 01.22.07 @ 10:24 am

If Hagan breaks in between 8 - 10% the Liberals will be in big trouble.

Comment/commentaire by Andrew Brander 01.22.07 @ 10:41 am

A pretty tight race indeed! HA. Liberals have this one I think, but we’ll see

VERY Early prediction:

Chan - 45%
Yuan - 43%
Hagan - 8%
Manning - 4%

Not so good to see the poor green predictions! I think it’ll be easy for em to crack 3% atleast! Kamal is going to be the better candidate in my riding (I always get the best! Ha!) but I’m going to watch em all.

Comment/commentaire by Mark-Jimga Johanahew 01.22.07 @ 3:33 pm

Jay Miller is the Libertarian candidate

Comment/commentaire by Hagarty Quetton 01.23.07 @ 5:32 pm

This election is close and the race is clearly heating up. The mud slinging has begun. Last night I saw some people trashing a PC sign on highway seven near McCowan. Michael Chan called a press conference a few days ago and accused John Tory of being a racist, and PC’s have been telling people at the door that the NDP is not credible. This is a very dirty campaign, its just a matter of time before tires start getting slashed.

Although I clearly hope the NDP wins, I’m thinking this is a safe liberal seat, although democratic space’s numbers would suggest differently.

Comment/commentaire by ORANGE DIPPER 01.24.07 @ 3:31 pm

ORANGE DIPPER’s credibility is set how high again?

Soon you’ll be telling us that the NDP are throwing YAMS at the candidates.

Lets keep it clean folks.

Comment/commentaire by RED STREAK 01.25.07 @ 8:19 am

Well, the NDP isn’t credible, at least not as a choice in Markham. If I were a Dipper in Markham, I’d be voting Liberal. (Which makes me wonder why the PCs have been calling the NDP not credible; that would seem poor strategy to me.)

Comment/commentaire by Tom 01.25.07 @ 8:19 am

you missed the point..

Michael Chan accusing John Tory as being racist is as bigoted as the PC’s calling the NDP not credible..

Which is on the same level of credibility as me saying.. Michael Chan was seen last night smashing NDP signs singing out praises for that PC guy doing the Hokey Pokey

It doesn’t make sense.. so stop spreading rumors

Comment/commentaire by RED STREAK 01.25.07 @ 8:29 am

Look the point I was making is that this is becoming a trashy race. There is a lot going on behind the scenes I’m sure that average people are not exposed to.

Clearly people should vote NDP as principals are more important than strategic voting. It is Michael Chan who is not the Credible candidate.

The Balance of power won’t change and its about sending a message to McGuinty. For Michael Chan, who barley even speaks English or French, Canada’s official languages, and doesn’t live in the riding to be mud slinging clearly shows desperation since there is clearly so much to pick on him for.

If you live in a glass house… well you know.

I would suggest Michael Chan come down from his Ivory Tower and end patronage appointments for Liberal staffers.

VOTE NDP – VOTE FOR JANICE HAGAN

Comment/commentaire by ORANGE DIPPER 01.25.07 @ 9:30 am

Once again the libertarian candidate here is:

Jay Miller

Comment/commentaire by Hagarty Quetton 01.25.07 @ 1:59 pm

New numbers in today!

Michael Chan (LIB) 44%
Janice Hagan (NDP) 7.2%
Bernadette Manning (GREEN) 2.2%
Alex Yuan (PC) 44.5%

Notes:

The gap is closing. Margin of error leaves virtual tie.

Comment/commentaire by Anonymous 01.26.07 @ 8:19 am

After doing some canvassing for my party i’d have to say the numbers are closer to

Michael Chan (LIB) 50%
Janice Hagan (NDP) 6%
Bernadette Manning (GREEN) 1%
Alex Yuan (PC) 43%

There is no way that PC guy is that close

Comment/commentaire by RED STREAK 01.26.07 @ 9:09 am

What’s your party RED STREAK? hahaha You question my credibility eh!
To be quite honest this riding is going to go either liberal or PC. Simply disgusting. However the NDP vote will gain, and will pick up. I wish I lived in Markham, I would vote for Janice Hagan. The Liberals are really dirty in this riding. Also disgusting. Perhaps a good game of communism ball would put them in their place. We need to get rid of the liberals.

Comment/commentaire by ORANGE DIPPER 01.26.07 @ 10:40 am

The party that’s going to win obviously.

The show of support for our party is outstanding, we litterally have signs everywhere and strong support from the Asian community (the population that doesn’t normally vote). It’s going to be an interesting race. To be a little more accurate these are my predictions for the by-election.

Michael Chan (LIB) 48%
Alex Yuan (PC) 44% (plus or minus 2%)

The REST can goto the other parties.. no way that NDP will even get above 5%

By the way I like my Yams boiled, mashed, or baked but not raw, i’m sure the candidates will appreciate that too.

Comment/commentaire by RED STREAK 01.26.07 @ 11:48 am

*Chokes on my cough drop* Ndp will get atleast 5% no more then 7% Greens will get atleast 2% no more then 5% the two others will get a combined total of 1% Its funny how obvious someones party is by how they predict. Its worse then biased out here!
Chans got it though.

Comment/commentaire by Mark-Jimga Johanahew 01.26.07 @ 3:36 pm

Patrick Redmond is the Family Coalition candidate.

Comment/commentaire by Mark-Jimga Johanahew 01.27.07 @ 4:21 pm

At the start, I would have said Chan by a landslide because better organized and funded but as the camapaign progresses the PC Yuan is getting closer, that is why Tory visited riding 3 times this past week. Right now I say very low voter turnout and Chan by 5 pts but slipping. Not good for Dalton in October if conservatives within 1000 votes on election day.

Comment/commentaire by BloggingBob 01.28.07 @ 9:02 am

Red,

If you say that th liberals are OBVIOUSLY going to win, yet you also say Yuan is at 46 while you are at 48, clearly thats not too OBVIOUS. I would say will win, so people should vote NDP to send a message to Dalton McGuinty.

Comment/commentaire by ORANGE DIPPER 01.28.07 @ 10:35 am

Red, your arrogance level astonishes me. This is absolutly the discusting kind of attitue of an aaroganyt libeal party. I dont care who epopel vote for, but DO NOT VOTE LIBERAL. Vote NDP, Vote PC, Vote GREEN.

ANYTHING BUT LIBERAL!

Comment/commentaire by Jacob Stanford 01.28.07 @ 10:39 am

Woah, I see some nastyness here. Not to good kiddies! Orange dipper, I’m sure that McGuinty would get just as good of a messege if the conservatives, greens, or smaller party got my vote. I don’t see why the ndp thinks that the only way a leaders going to recieve the messege is if they vote for the ndp. A better messege is to threaten there power and elect conservatives, or get the environment into shape by electing Greens. or better yet say yes to proportional representation come the 2007 provincial election.
Which would send a messege to both conservative and liberal parties. The liberals and conservatives have run the country for a very long time and we’re still doing fine, so whats the problem? Things were a hell of alot worse with Bob Rae! Don’t deny it either, its simply a fact, oh and look what party he switched to, the liberals. I’m not a socialist and believe in a change in government so not one of the three parties in parliament get my vote. The Greens do. Other parties deserve a chance to, but If I want a new colour in parliament the best chance is to go green.

Comment/commentaire by Mark-Jimga Johanahew 01.28.07 @ 2:43 pm

Personally I think the tories have a good chance at winning this riding.

In a by-election those who are opposed to the government are more likely to vote then those supporting it.

Markham is also a bellwether. The tories have held it both provincially and federally (remember jim jones) in the recent past.

If the grits manage to win this race then they’re going to be in decent shape going into the October election.

Comment/commentaire by OJ 01.28.07 @ 3:55 pm

During the Chinese debate yesterday, Janice Hagan said roughly:Our car has three gears. We can stay on neutral with the liberals, go on reverse with the Conservatives or go forward with the NDP. I think she did the best of the three but was the person that was most ignored. The majority of the Chinese audience wanted the hear what the two other candidates had to say instead.

Predictions:
Liberal:46%
Conservatives:43%
NDP:7%
Green:4%

Comment/commentaire by Anonymous 01.29.07 @ 1:06 pm

It’s quite interesting, We all know about Janice Hagan. She’s probably ran in every major election for the last 7 or 8 years, and is known in the community for being a very real and down-to-earth person. But how about the other two major candidates.

http://www.yrng.com/yr/yr4/YR_News/Newscentre/Economist_and_Sun/story/3852611p-4457215c.html

First i did my some research on this Alex Yuan guy and came across this link.

http://www.thecomputermechanics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9280

there were a couple of other similar articles written about him and this S’port for Kids organization he founded, also articles about him and his company and some other references he’s been stating in his material.

Michael Chan, well other than all those Liberal linked websites, there really isn’t anything on him.

Which leads me to ask, (particularily to Red Streak’s arrogance), Would Michael Chan really be a voice for the community?

Janice Hagan has shown to be the voice for the NDP, and being a citizen of Markham for so long, we know she’ll speak out.

Alex Yuan has shown that he is a community leader in his own right through his activities.

and Michael Chan has been pretty quiet….

I think people should carefully consider their candidates before jumping the Liberal Bandwagon and really think about who should represent them in Queen’s Park

Comment/commentaire by Evaway 01.30.07 @ 12:41 pm

I will be voting NDP because it is obvious that we need some decent representation for Markham, something we clearly haven’t had in the last 3 years.

Frankly, it is embarrassing that if I vote for Janice Hagan, (which I plan to do) she will be sitting closer to the premier than any liberal we elect would. If we elect the liberal candidate, he has even less to offer people than Tony Wong did.

Tony Wong left because he was in the back bench on the other side of the house, and as one of the only Chinese people in the house, the Markham economist said that Dalton McGuinty is being accused as being a racist.

Shoving Chinese-Canadians in the back bench it embarrassing for all of us, white, black, brown, and Chinese.

I will be voting NDP.

Don’t see how any other small party couldn’t get a good chunk of work done as well.

Comment/commentaire by Mark-Jimga Johanahew 02.03.07 @ 8:14 pm

I thinking that you should read this site.
Half of it is in Chinese , Half of it is in English
But there are many interesting comments.

See “Ontario Elections Today” for our final commentary and “guess-timates” of what might happen.

Comment/commentaire by democraticspace 02.08.07 @ 1:25 pm

Interesting results in last night’s election results. While the liberal vote was roughly the same the Tory vote dropped 6% points. Not good for John Tory’s torys
