This is a sure win for Gary Grant. The NDP candidate Neethan Shan is running for NDP after being denied by the Federal Liberals. He will suck away most of the Tamil Liberal voters, opening it up for Gary Grant to win. Infact, if Neethan can manage his turn out, then he might even win this race.

Another riding the Liberals will lose is SSW, Lorenzio.

This one’s too close to call. All three parties have won in this part of town before (give or take a few boundary changes). Even the NDP, with a stronger than usual candidate in Neethan Shan could take this riding in a tight 3-way split. With no incumbent, this will be an exciting race to watch.

Comment/commentaire by Ivan 08.20.07 @ 3:12 pm

Wow, I thought this was Margaret Best’s seat with ease. Chambers was a good Minister. I have heard that Shan could take this. WOW

Comment/commentaire by THINK 09.13.07 @ 12:34 pm

This riding due to the new boundary changes is not a firm riding for either party. Although a strong incumbant is about to leave it is not a frim Liberal riding. My money is with Shan, young and ambitious and from my research has done considerable work in this community.

How come all of the projection models shows as an easy victory for Best?

Comment/commentaire by THINK 09.17.07 @ 5:06 pm

Best and the Liberals have been invisible here.
I have not received any information about Ms. Best, or been contacted by her campaign. On the other hand I’ve already been called by the NDP and PC campaigns, and met their candidates at my door step. I’m still undecided, but it was nice that those two candidates made the effort to personally knock on my door.

Looks like this one’s between Shan and Grant.

John Tory has made two appearances in Scarborough-Guildwood speaking presumably for Gary Grant to try and tell us we live in a crime-filled riding. Both times he used the words violence and Scarborough in the same sentence. In my opinion Tory and Grant are fear mongering and Scarborough bashing by twisting crime statistics. We all know that most crime categories are down. Grant is a one issue candidate who says he is the founder of Crime Stoppers (I understand it was part of his job to convince his bosses to set CS up in Toronto - only after it came to Hamilton first). Tory blames McGuinty for the money running out for the federally funded YELL program which helps kids at risk. There is a lot of truth twisting going on with the John Tory Party.

Margarett Best has my vote - she understands the issues and she understands the riding.

Comment/commentaire by Jane 09.21.07 @ 6:13 pm

Gonna be close but I give the edge to the Liberals here, they wouldve won in the last election here by 23 points had the riding used these boundaries.

Comment/commentaire by Red 09.26.07 @ 3:37 pm

This is going to be an interesting riding to watch out for. This riding can really can be anybody’s game.

The Liberals are for sure scared about losing this riding. Best is not the BEST candidate for this riding. For a lawyer, I dont think she articulate at all. And she is definitely not going to get my vote because she goes around saying that she is a woman candidate. Give me a better reason!

Grant only talks about crime - we get the point - so what else do you stand for? Grant finally did talk about something different the other day. Apparently not his best subject (hence his preference to stick to crime) but he talked about uploading services back to the Province and taking the financial burden off the City. Guess what, his government downloaded these services in the first place onto the City!

Shan as the NDP candidate has an impressive background and bio. The NDP has put forward a strong candidate and he is going to be a force to reckon with. Don’t know the welcome he will receive in certain parts of the riding but he will for sure rock some things up in the riding. About time!

Comment/commentaire by Maya A 09.28.07 @ 2:06 pm

Well, someone’s dreaming in technicolor! Neethan’s background and bio certainly is impressive when you consider he was a die hard Liberal until a week before his nomination (apparently not happy he didn’t get the Lib Fed nomination in Scarb SW), and he’s still a Markham Trustee, hmmm, should follow Shiner’s example if he wants to show any respect to his voters. Such a background screams integrity … NOT!!! Seems to me like Neethan’s a bit of a political opportunist.

It looked like he was off to a strong start, but the NDP were throwing up signs whether people wanted them or not - Lawrence Extendicare being an example, and his signs are much harder to find south of Kingston Road. I think the NDP needs someone a little more impressive than Neethan to stand a snowball’s chance in hell in SG :(

Gary Grant, so called star candidate doesn’t have much shine. About the only thing I agree with Maya on. Nice guy, but wholly underwhelming. Kind of ironic that the single issue crime guy is the one that got his office broken into … still hasn’t diverted attention away from that half baked fund all religious schools idea.

The best is the immigrant woman that raised 3 kids on her own, put herself through university and law school, and held down a job at the smae time. Now there’s someone who can get things done! A lot more Best signs have been popping up in the riding this week. Unless something major happens, it doesn’t look like she going to have much of a problem on October 10, given the current trends.

Comment/commentaire by Dan 09.28.07 @ 5:40 pm

I’m calling this one for Shan. If obvious liberal insiders are scared enough to smear him and spew talking points online, he must be leading.

Comment/commentaire by Big Ronnie G 09.29.07 @ 8:59 am

I want to see change but this is a strong liberal hold since ‘95. Increasing crime and unemployement for residents in this area may swing the vote either way. This is gonna be a nail biter.
Despite Best showing the least in leadership enthusiasm her chances of winning solely riding on the Liberal wagon is high. Tory’s staunch endorsement of Grant has placed considerable attention on reclaiming this previous PC riding. NDP campaign is adequate and provides an alternative voice.
Truth be told, the night of the election watch to see this riding be given considerable attention. It’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Comment/commentaire by G for Grendatta 10.01.07 @ 12:28 pm

How is this a “strong liberal hold since ‘95″ Bill? Steve Gilcrest of the PCs held the old Scarborough East riding (which made up about 3 quarters of the new guildwood riding) from ‘95 to ‘03 after taking it back from the NDP.

Comment/commentaire by Melissa J 10.01.07 @ 10:27 pm

The current projection for Scarborough-Guildwood on this site show the Liberals ahead by 10+ points. With the Liberals gaining in the polls and almost assured of a majority, this will be an easy Liberal hold.

Comment/commentaire by csquared 10.03.07 @ 1:36 pm

I was invited to attend an all candidates debate yesterday and it was just pure jokes!

The liberal lady just kept screaming really loud. She yelled at the residents that asked her questions and got really rude with them too. Imagine if someone gets that rude when concerned voters ask genuine questions - how they will behave with residents once elected.

I really hope there were some media folks there taking notes of her unacceptable behaviour. I have been a liberal supporter in the past but feel ashamed because of her behaviour. It is a bad reflection for the party and for the people who work hard for it and believe in the philosophy of it.

The worst part was - that at one point she said that she wasnt running because she wanted to but rather because Ms Chambers asked her to. Why would you say that?

If the liberals win in this riding it’s because of the liberal banner and NOT the candidate! If they lose it’s the reverse.

Comment/commentaire by Chantelle 10.05.07 @ 12:55 pm

You think that’s funny.

Margaret Best was on Goldhawk Live and get this, she says something along the lines of “Dalton McGuinty only broke 14% of his promises and kept 86% of them” or something like that. Who says that?

Then they keep talking about a deficit that the PC party left. The whole province knew what state we were in, why didnt the liberals? And if you dont know the country’s and province economic history, current financial situation and background why we’re you even running??? Did you they think that they can learn as they go?

Comment/commentaire by James 10.05.07 @ 1:20 pm

Please note this comment is in a series of comments by me. I’m doing a prediction for every riding. For this riding I’m predicting the winner will be the libs

Comment/commentaire by Nick J Boragina 10.08.07 @ 12:35 am

If anyone is taking the time to actually delve into the election platforms looking for info on the environment you will see that the Liberals are the real greens. Under the Minster of Education, Kathleen Wynne the Liberals adopted all of the recommendations in “Shaping our Schools shaping our future” a report by the curriculum council’s panel to examine how our kids learn about the environment headed by former Canadian astronaut Dr. Roberta Bondar. Environmental education to help kids learn how to become stewards of this province and to learn to live sustainably will be back in Ontario’s classrooms. Margarett Best has mentioned this in her campaign literature and will be a strong advocate for education.

The Tories by contrast make little reference to the environment and scored 8 to the Liberals 34 in a Toronto Star survey of the environmental platforms of the parties.

If voters finally start to think seriously about the environment and who is actually positioned to make changes now, then the Liberals are a sure bet on this front alone.

This is for sure young and active NDP Shan.

Comment/commentaire by Don 10.09.07 @ 8:42 am

My father had a dream that NDP candidate Neethan Shan will win. And he shall.
All shall wait and see.
The prophet has spoken.
