While this riding is English (which should bode well for the tories) its also Catholic (which actually counts for something here). The only time this riding really voted for the tories is when Catholics lead the party. Liberal win. unfortunatly.

I wonder how this would look with Independent Danny Gay.

Comment/commentaire by Keith Vickers 01.14.06 @ 5:33 am

Dont take this one for granted , i worked in a troy win there for Bud Jardine and i can tell you that this one could go either way.

Comment/commentaire by kevin 01.15.06 @ 11:01 pm

Hopefully will go Tory ,but will probably go to the Grits.

Comment/commentaire by Paul 01.16.06 @ 8:49 pm

Danny Gay seems to have a bit of support from the Liberal supporters in the area. There will probably be some vote splitting between him and Charlie, posibly enough to put Mike in. Hopefully, we will have our second tory ever after Jan. 23.

Miramichi voters might want to think about this…
With what looks like a majority Consevative government about to be elected in Ottawa and a provincial Conservative government sitting in Fredicton, electing a Liberal MP in our riding, to go along with our Liberal MLA would, in my my humble opinion, be shooting ourselves in our cillective foot. What chance are we going to have in obtaining anything??????????????

Comment/commentaire by DJ 01.17.06 @ 4:22 am

I guess I’ll have to agree with DJ. Haven’t the Liberals taken the riding of Miramichi for granted long enough? It’s time to start thinking clearly and forget how Grandpa voted. With the things that are going on today with the pulp mills, fuel prices, health care and the oveall economy, “we need to be on the side of the government”.

Comment/commentaire by dboy 01.17.06 @ 6:39 am

As a catholic riding, it will likely vote for the party with the most catholic values. that’s not the Lbrals. I’m saying Con’s by under 5% though

Comment/commentaire by Wendel 01.17.06 @ 8:52 am

I understand your point DJ but no amount of bacon is going to solve our economic problems. There has to be a national strategy to help the rural regions. I just don’t see how another call centre is going to help much. The Conservatives have nothing to say about that at all. Their policies are geared for the Western and 905 region of Toronto vote. A bad Conservative campaign or a good one won’t make that much difference in the Maritimes. NB, NS and Newfoundland only have about 4 or 5 more seats for the Conservatives. The rural west will support the Conservatives no matter what so the’ve focused on the upper middle class Ontario ridings in their big business tax cuts. Thats not going to help us.

Just a comment to Nick Boragina about the Catholic thing. Nick, I don’t think you looked into Mike Morrison really well. Mike Morrison is Catholic where as Hubbard is not. Now, mind you…I don’t feel that will factor in but then again I’m not Catholic so if you say it’s a big deal then maybe they’ll be supporting Morrison because of it. Do you suppose that changes your opinion locally a bit?

Comment/commentaire by Skippy 01.17.06 @ 7:49 pm

while I am unconfidant about alot of my predictions in NB this is one I am confidant about. Liberal its more then just who’s Jesus you beleive, Hubbard is one of the most socially conservative (fiscally too) liberal MP’s IIRC. an attack on him from the right is doomed to failure, if from that alone. This riding is more irish then french, it wont be swung as easily as Quebec

Comment/commentaire by Nick Boragina 01.17.06 @ 10:52 pm

I find it funny that people from Miramichi will put this guy back in. The area has 21.5% unemployment, he voted against decreasing the weeks required to qualify for EI from 14 to 12, and hasn’t brought any significant number of jobs to the area. Little grants here and there aren’t going to protect the future of the area. He consistently passes the buck on social issues to the province instead of providing ideas for possible federal solutions. He has become complacent and isn’t interested in rocking the boat to get more for the area. The area has gone back under Hubbard, not forward. Nice man or not…he’s getting what nice guys get…nothing. We don’t need a nice guy in Ottawa, we need a fighter. It’s time people get their heads out of the sand.

Comment/commentaire by Skippy 01.18.06 @ 7:03 am

If you think having a bunch of right-wing knuckle-draggers who want to cut the few social programs left will help that 21% of unemployed, you will be sorely disappointed. Not to mention they want to close the gun registry, which employs locals.

Comment/commentaire by Chris 01.18.06 @ 8:14 am

skippy, i agree 100%.. definatly time for a change. chris, i think your colors are showing. red. no need for name calling in this forum, just last week harper has said they would keep the gun registry. thays good enough for me.

Comment/commentaire by dboy 01.18.06 @ 3:34 pm

gimme a break! lets stop waiting for a government (any party) to let us sit back and say “they owe me” we are canadians!! dont forget that. we ned a change, not only in government ,but in the way we think and react. make our elected representatives accountable. we put them there to look after us. we live in the best country in the world. if the government screws up,we have every right to change it. that is our right….vote …please ..or .. stop complaining

Comment/commentaire by jv 01.18.06 @ 8:15 pm

Nice numbers goodbye Charlie Hello Mike

Comment/commentaire by jv 01.20.06 @ 6:05 pm

Islander,
This is not the old Reform Party either. Harper’s Father was from New Brunswick. He has visited the province many times during the campaign, and Bernard Lord is a friend of his. Now, whether you like Lord or not is beside the point, but it would be good to have a Tory government in both federally and provincially and to have a close relationship between the premiere and prime minister. If this riding goes blue, I think you’ll see more things happen here. If it goes red, then the same old nothing is going to happen. The tories are going to be in power, that much is pretty clear. I would rather have a member on the side of the government.

Comment/commentaire by M 01.21.06 @ 5:55 pm

It’s a Tory win all the way!! Never mind with worrying about a Harper hidden agenda, what about the hidden agenda that siphoned millions of tax dollars into the Liberal bank accounts to help them win the last two elections!!Now that’s a hidden agenda!! Thank God for Sheila Fraser!!!!
Now we need to know where it went and who is responsible and let’s deal with them immediately
If Martha Stewart went to jail for $40 000 how about the millions that were stolen from we Canadian taxpayers. Get out and vote for honesty-Michael Morrison!!!!

Comment/commentaire by Peggy Kirkpatrick 01.22.06 @ 9:20 am

This is the home of the gun registry offices. Hello? Self preservation will prevail. Scary tactics will also reflect the voting pattern.
Bad for the Conservatives and good for the incumbant.

Comment/commentaire by Bill 01.22.06 @ 9:59 am

This gun registry thing is pathetic. All those people that work there are going to vote Liberal to save their jobs…COMMON…how the heck are the Liberals going to keep it open when they plan on banning all Hand Guns in Canada! Nobody has even taken a second to think this over. The Liberals say the Conservatives will have to close it by repealing the Long gun portion of the Legislation…well…then…how will they not close it if they want to ban all hand guns in Canada??????? People, the Liberals have lied long enough to Miramichi. The Miramichi will be better without Hubbard holding us down to suit his Party interests. Why not let Morrison carry the flag locally and see how far he can take it!

Comment/commentaire by Skippy 01.22.06 @ 11:00 am

Michael Morrison is a member of the Canadian church they have over 15 conservative candidates running this election that we have been able to identify.

This is a faciest organisation with virtually no members in Atlantic Canada. She is seen in a photo with Barry Devolin in Haliburton county in Ontario last year this is a Christian church that believes that only white English speaking Canadians are Canadian and is basically a cult with its claws established in business from Northern Ontario to Northern BC

Do your research yourself only Anti Racist Action has any decent info on this well hidden organisation that we have been able to find online.

We are targeting only three of these candidates including your candidate because the conservatives have the others in the bag.

Please vote to defeat Michael Morrison.

It was Belinda Stronarch in the photo apparently.

Comment/commentaire by Drew 01.22.06 @ 12:05 pm

Just a note about gun control. Hardware stores from one end of this country to the other are going to see a huge run on shovels starting Tuesday.. as LAW ABIDING canadians from coast to coast start digging up their guns. The Liberals answer to gun crime? Take away legal handguns. How will they know where the legal handguns are? The gun registry of course. First registration, then confiscation. That was the plan all along, and that’s why this former liberal is voting Tory.

Comment/commentaire by Bob Gray 01.22.06 @ 1:46 pm

The Miramichi has been “screwed” over for far too long. Politicians do nothing but squander time and speak rhetoric to a public who has no confidence in such corrupt and useless debate. It is time for the people of the Miramich to fight, not a fight that can be won through elections/voting. Voting gets us no where: we elect people who do nothing to better our community, they simply argure the same issues over and over and accomplish nothing. The only way any real change is going to occur is through action. This system is a failure, and thus a new way of organizing labour and workers must emerge to overthrow this corrupt system. Take a look at Venezuela(and don’t listen to right wing US media) - the workers are taking over the factories and eliminating the class divide. Maybe the workers in Miramichi should take over the the mills, and eliminate the greedly CEOS who are sucking the capital out of our economy and exporting it back to Europe/USA or whereever else they have economic interests. It is time for the people of Miramichi, of Canada, to put the power in their own hands, and eliminate the heirarchial capitalism that creates the jobless, the homeless, and the hopeless.
