As much as I’d love to see the tories win here, and as much as I’m uncertain about where things are going, to be honest, I’m leaning Liberal in my prediction for this riding at this time.

Comment/commentaire by Nick Boragina 01.11.06 @ 5:12 pm

I think your off on this one. I am hearing Mr. Wallace all the way.

Comment/commentaire by kevin 01.15.06 @ 10:24 pm

Seems like Wallace is gaining, it’s pretty close right now. I think it’ll be Wallace by a very small margin. Zed doesn’t have his in-laws any longer.

Comment/commentaire by Ted 01.16.06 @ 5:33 am

John Wallace should win this riding. It is time for CHANGE. Harper has been here three times since August and he is committed to the Maritimes to clean up the Harbour with the other levels of government. The libs have had 12 years to do it. Vote for Change. Vote for honesty.

Comment/commentaire by jay 01.17.06 @ 3:18 am

Con by less than 5%

Comment/commentaire by Wendel 01.17.06 @ 8:53 am

moving this to TCTC for me. The tories have had a major upswing, but its questionable weather or not that’s reached the maritimes.

Comment/commentaire by Nick Boragina 01.17.06 @ 10:54 pm

Funny, I would love to vote for Wallace, if he didn’t work for the Conservatives.

Comment/commentaire by Chris 01.18.06 @ 8:16 am

Wallace to Win. It will be good for Saint John to have a say in the torry camp

Comment/commentaire by Patricia G McQuaid 01.19.06 @ 11:34 am

Wallace will win by several hundred.

Comment/commentaire by Shawn 01.19.06 @ 1:30 pm

Remember the last two elections, when Zed claimed you had to vote for him, because it was important to have an MP on the gov’t side? Now his tune is, “I can work with anyone.”

I wonder why? It’s going to be close, but I think Wallace will squeak in.

Comment/commentaire by Ted 01.19.06 @ 4:27 pm

Wallace is doing great in the riding, Zed is not doing well. Wallace will pull this one out, but it will be close.

Comment/commentaire by Harold 01.20.06 @ 8:33 pm

And you think Martin cares about Saint John?

Zed’s in office for a year and a half and has brought us nothing but promises. I don’t trust any Fiberal promise until I have the cash in my hands!

We will see Harper’s support of NB after we win on election day :)

Comment/commentaire by Not Islander 01.21.06 @ 11:43 am

Need I remind everyone of the tremendous achievements of Paul Zed and Team Saint John. Here in our riding has Paul has secured over $72 million dollars in his 18 months in Ottawa. This significant investment represents more money our community has ever received. For comparative purposes, he has accomplished more in 18 months than his predecessors have in 18 years!

Paul has won the debates, he has proven his team approach has been highly successful for Saint John and we need to rally behind him and allow Paul to continue to represent our riding.

That fact is that Paul doesn’t need his former in laws in win the election. Paul’s track record and bringing Team Saint John to meet with the Prime Minister and senior cabinet ministers is the first time any Saint John group has done so.

Paul has the experience, he is well connected in Ottawa and he continues to work hard for everyone in our riding.

Let’s send Paul back to Ottawa to keep building.

Comment/commentaire by Andrew 01.21.06 @ 3:35 pm

I love when Zed’s campaign team hit up sites like this :)

“Paul has secured over $72 million”

Ummm, you do realize who you are talking to right? This is Saint John. We do get promised a lot. Especially close to election time. Remember when that announcement was made. Remember whose government nearly fell? Take a wild guess! They have been promising us money for twelve years, maybe it will arrive once we re-elect Zed?? No, not likely.

“Paul has won the debates”

Paul won the debates eh? I guess you missed the actual debates. Most educated people I talk to agree that it was Wallace slightly over Zed.

“That fact is that Paul doesn’t need his former in laws in win the election.”

So he did need them last time around? Funny, I thought running against an unpopular candidate was enough help. Even then he only won by 3500 votes. Maybe running ads in our newspaper without mentioning LIBERAL anywhere on it will help. Gee, I hope they don’t censor the word LIBERAL it on this site; it’s a bad word to say now in Saint John!

“he is well connected in Ottawa”

Well connected is he? I know the Liberals like to stick together, too bad that’s going to change this election. Many people that he is “connected” to in Ottawa will be missing. Luckly, he will be missing too, so maybe they can go hang out together.

“Let’s send Paul back to Ottawa to keep building.”

Let’s not. Simply put, Andrew you are a simple minded sucker trying to get Zed in so you can somehow get a government job. Too bad for you, the Conservatives will be in by then! :)

Comment/commentaire by An Intelligent Person 01.21.06 @ 8:07 pm

I agree that Zed has done a lot for the city. That can’t be denied. The question to ask now is, can he continue to do so from across the floor? After all, his big mantra before was that you need an MP on the gov’t side, and to follow Andrew’s logic, he proved that point. So why would the voters not follow the same logic this time?

There is no question that Zed has done a lot for the city, he has been part of a group that has made things happen. Funny though, that he’s promising to make Lepreau2 happen, when he couldn’t make Lepreau1+ happen.

zed
friends door to door with torys claims zed lead to big to overcome.frustrated, but hard to argue with this liberals performance
unfortunately for us tories, zed goes in with plurality

zed in a walk, tory surge falters

Comment/commentaire by ralph 01.22.06 @ 6:27 am

I hate to say it boys, but zed has got us again. I am a long time tory supporting but let’s admit, Zed definetely has the edge and at least we know he is going to do a solid job in Ottawa.

Comment/commentaire by Jason 01.22.06 @ 8:30 am

I actually have to agree with Jason. I have been a Tory for a long time and the cocktail circuit and the door to door makes it clear to me that Zed will take this…even by the PCs. They like Zed but quietly need to pretend that they are supporting PCs. Wallace is seen even by is closest friends that he cannot get the job done…except if it means putting those great pleats in his pants and shirts.

Comment/commentaire by ROBERT 01.22.06 @ 8:44 am

wallace not well known, will fade in stretch
zed in a romp

Comment/commentaire by carol 01.22.06 @ 8:47 am

I have done door to door, collected money and made calls . The election is tight but Noone knows Mr. Wallace and those who have worked with him tell me it is his way or the Highway. He resigned from Harbour passage because he couln’t work with the board .. and th erecreation committee weel he didn’t recognize his own conflict of interest. Don
t forget the LNG. Everyone knows who he is supporting there.
Paul Zed will win and we will benefit form his knowledge of the community and how to access programs in Ottawa.

Comment/commentaire by Martha 01.22.06 @ 9:17 am

Martha, you article is a very sad excuse for supporting Zed.

Number one, you admit you worked for Zed.

You then tell us what is like to work for Wallace. Funny, you didn’t mention you worked for him? How would you know what it’s like? You wouldn’t be, gasp, making up stories would you? If so, I’d guess you were a Fiberal. Martin could sure use you on his team!

Saint John is much better off without Zed. We need Wallace because he is a leader and will be working with the various parts of the city. It’s about what you can accomplish in the city with what you have, not how many “promises” of money you can get out of a government.

Just think about Child Care, any kids that would have benefited in 1993, would be stuck paying for it for the rest of their lives if you had your way!

Comment/commentaire by Will 01.22.06 @ 1:38 pm

I think it will be close. If Zed does get in, then I think the city will get the square root of sfa as far as gov’t assistance. Unfortunately, Lord seems either to hate or just completely ignore Saint John, and it won’t help to be on the wrong side federally.

Funny that both of the front runners are ex Irving lawyers, though. It makes it hard to pin the bias on either one, since they’re both in it.

Comment/commentaire by Ted 01.22.06 @ 2:42 pm

Well Guys, Let’s just cut to the chase,

Paul Zed has the experience Saint John needs in order to succeed out of the corner of the Country. Let’s face it, John Wallace does not fully understand Ottawa the way Zed does. Obviously this one is going to the wire due to the Liberal downfall but Zed is the better Candidate.

Comment/commentaire by Nick Boragina 01.22.06 @ 4:28 pm

I must admit that the PC have run a good campaign or should I say “half campaign”. It too bad he would not let reporters ask his fellow PC’s in certain ridings to answer an questions. “Something to hide Mr. Harper”. I like the way PC call the supporters of the Liberal Party…”Fiberals”. I guess you cannot be called a liar when your Party leader does not let you speak at all…fewer shoe prints in the mouth I guess. I believe that we will see a Liberal win in Saint John but you know what either way it is a minority government and we will be back here again in a year’s time. In that case, who cares?

Comment/commentaire by Brian 01.22.06 @ 5:09 pm

Paul is certainly in tuff with the Tory surge so I predict a very close race but St John will follow there Conservative ritual as in the past a replace Mr. Zed.

Comment/commentaire by Bruce 01.23.06 @ 12:05 pm

Off to vote - going for Zed - he’s a hard worker and people respect that - like someone said in the paper the idea - Wallace has the Chablis vote - but Saint John is a Moosehead town. Zed will win no problems.

Comment/commentaire by Blair 01.23.06 @ 1:25 pm

HEY HEY WHAT DO YA SAY? PAUL ZED ALL THE WAY!

Comment/commentaire by The Man 01.23.06 @ 3:05 pm

I have already voted for Paul Zed. He knows how to get things done around the city, and he knows how to get things done around Ottawa. A newcomer like John Wallace will back track on all the progress we have made as a city over the past few years. Electing Paul will protect the future of Saint John. No one cares more for the city than Paul Zed, and he has my vote.

Comment/commentaire by Laura 01.23.06 @ 3:09 pm

The Maritimes will be left behind under the Torys, the new (rehearsed) Stephen Harper is trying to smooth things over for many many past mistakes but we are not quick to forget. Wallace won’t have the pull with the Tory regime, he will be but a bit player in Harper’s act. Harper’s programs will be great for the West- too bad we live out East. Vote Paul Zed. Enough said.

Comment/commentaire by Mark 01.23.06 @ 3:17 pm

To “AnIntelligentPerson” who posted above-
Perhaps you missed the CBC feature “Bringing home the Bacon” where Paul was featured for bringing such a larger amount of money back to his riding. The money has already been in use across the city. Paul Zed gets the job done.

Comment/commentaire by Troy 01.23.06 @ 3:27 pm

Paul Zed is a true leader. If there is ever a time to vote for the Candidate and not party this is the time.
ZED ZED ZED ZED ZED!!

Comment/commentaire by Sally 01.23.06 @ 3:28 pm

John Wallace has nowhere near the ability that Mr. Zed has as our Saint John MP. Stephen Harper is giving all of Atlantic Canada nightmares. Please, I want to sleep well tonight!!

Comment/commentaire by Patricia 01.23.06 @ 3:33 pm

Paul Zed…thats what I thought.

Comment/commentaire by Patricia 01.23.06 @ 8:41 pm

Many events will occur before the next election and Paul Zed will be well prepared for a campaign. Many inside Tories do not want Mr. Wallace as they feel he is weak so there is a split in the Tory Party in Saint John. Since the last election Mr. Zed has gained many new supporters from other parties. There will also be a new Leader of the Liberal Party and Mr. Harper could not carry his Bag to the Rink. The People will decide.
