This race is now a toss-up. If the Public Works Minister wants to keep his seat, he is going to need to win votes from traditional Red Tories and NDP voters fearful of a Tory government.

Comment/commentaire by Shaun 01.13.06 @ 1:10 am

If the polls continue in the current trend, this seat should return to its traditional Conservative status. Kings-Hants has a long history of Conservative victories.

Comment/commentaire by Eric 01.13.06 @ 1:48 am

Based on today’s political climate,Bob Mullan could very easily send Scott Brison to the political sidelines.Because of it’s strong Tory roots,if the present support trends continue, this riding will fall into the gain category for the Conservatives on election night.

Comment/commentaire by Kevin Mac Donald 01.13.06 @ 12:35 pm

I think Scott Brison is going to win by a bigger margin than last time! Anyone who has met Bob Mullan knows that he is not someone you would like to have representing you. He appears to have a temper that is most unbecoming of someone who could be representing your interests in Ottawa. On election day, residents of Kings-Hants will re-elect Scott Brison and we will send one of the best MP’s in the country back to Ottawa!

Comment/commentaire by Lindsay 01.14.06 @ 4:48 am

I think Scott Brison will be defeated in this election. HE HAS TOLD TO MANY PEOPLE TO KISS HIS YOU KNOW WHAT

Comment/commentaire by Karla 01.14.06 @ 6:42 am

I think that Scott’s day are numbered. He refuses to listen to reason. Any time he has been asked to do the right thing he can’t say yes or no.HE HAS A HISTORY OF SAYING ONE THING AND DOING ANOTHER. hE IS A WANNABEE NOT A lIBERAL

Comment/commentaire by margo macdonald 01.14.06 @ 8:11 am

If anyone in the 2006 Election deserve to lose there seat in the Parliament of Canada ,it is Scott Brison. Mr. Brison like his Ottawa sweetheart Belinda Stronach both put loyality to Canada in the dump so they could play in the Liberal sandbox. Scott good luck in the Big Apple after you are defeated on the 23 of Jan.2006

Comment/commentaire by robert scrymgeour 01.14.06 @ 8:15 am

This riding is to close to call. Mr Brison has been a candidate for both parties, so I would think that the conservatives would vote for there party, which is showing a lead in the polls. Mr brison was an oppourtinists when he became a liberal for a cabinet position and power. He is a one person issue, gay rights

Comment/commentaire by jane 01.14.06 @ 10:57 pm

Brison has betrayed too many people. He is a short sighted opportunist. He has shown that he will say whatever it takes to further one cause: His Own! Let’s hope the Conservative momentum continues.

Comment/commentaire by Mike 01.15.06 @ 3:05 am

Get real guys! Look at the graphs. The NDP vote is collapsing and Scott is a full 8% ahead of the doctor. This is not “too close to call” – it’s a personal win for a reasonably competent Liberal whose campaign optics have managed to show a respectable distance from Mr. Dithers. Of course there’s a week to go, but I would guess the electors will shy away from an outcome that would diminish the already stretched medical corps. I mean, running on “Dr”??? How do the CPs get to be so politically astute?

Comment/commentaire by Cal McMillan 01.15.06 @ 7:49 pm

I knew Scott in university when, for him, there was no party but the Tory party. He was “dyed in the wool” Conservative. I remember him proudly saying “Brian Mulroney is the greatest Prime Minister Canada has ever had.” As a Conservative myself, I always admired Scott. I believed he was loyal and principled, a real inspiration. It was because of Scott Brison that I got involved in politics at the organizational level. I knew someday he would be in the Commons, and I believed that he would play a role in helping to change the way the game is played, and perhaps inspire confidence in our political process among the disaffected and disillusioned, especially our youth. In remembering Scott this way, I can only surmise that his shocking betrayal was nothing more than an opportunistic grab for power, based on what now appears to have been his erroneous assumption that if he stayed where he was (that is, with ANY conservative party), he would never have the power he so obviously craved. The only way to fast-track his goals was to abandon his friends and supporters for Paul Martin. I always liked Scott and in many ways I always will, but now I have come to the conclusion that as far as politics are concerned, his loyalty and ambition are reserved for himself only. And what has his gamble accomplished? Three things: (a) the reinforcing of peoples’ negative perceptions of politicians, (b) disappointment for those who would have liked to see him work for the rebuilding of the party he loved, and (c) divine justice that, if he’s lucky, he’ll win a seat back in the opposition benches. And if that happens, then everyone will keep paying the price for Scott’s roll of the dice.

Comment/commentaire by IDB 01.15.06 @ 10:40 pm

The Conservative Party is not the PC Party that Brison was a member of first. He joined the Conservative party because it merged with the PC Party. The Conservative Party is not the PC Party of old, it is the Reform/Alliance Party of old. This is why Brison changed parties (as well as Stronach). The Liberal party is closer to the old PC Party than the Conservative Party is.

Comment/commentaire by Luke 01.16.06 @ 3:58 am

Looks the tide has turned and Brison is going to get caught in it.

Comment/commentaire by Bob 01.16.06 @ 6:08 am

Luke, you are right! The Conservative Party is BETTER that the old PC party. The old PC party was Liberal. Belinda and Scotty only care about one thing, themselves. They both knew exactly what they were involved in when they joined the Conservatives and jumped ship because of their own greedy quest for power. Unless they are claiming to be stupid, how can they say they did not know what the party was all about?I hope they both lose and go back to their mirrors where they can enjoy the view. That image is the only “person” in Canada they each really care about!

Comment/commentaire by Elizabeth Melnychuk 01.16.06 @ 8:44 pm

All these comments about Brison abandoning his party are way off; Mackay abandoned the PC party, and joined the deformed alliance.

You can’t fault a guy for not wanting to follow a leader (Mackay) who can’t honour any commitment he makes, whether it’s in writing to party members, or by virtue of a ring to a fiance. Speaking of opportunists!!!

Comment/commentaire by ted 01.17.06 @ 12:54 am

Why is anyone surprised that Brison left the Tories for the Liberals? He was running for a party that fundamentally disaproved of his lifestyle, so he bailed out. I think everyone saw sincerity in that move and that is why they elected him under the liberal banner in ‘04.

Comment/commentaire by Nigel E 01.17.06 @ 7:48 am

Luke you knucklehead… B.S. didnt jump ship because the CPC party is not the same old PC party of old. (I can see you point on Brison) She ran for the leadership of the newly formed party and she knew what it was. To give us this crap about Belinda jumping ship for the same reason as Brison. We can bitterly swallow the tale of Brison (PC vs CPC) but dont throw the ol B.S. into the same arguement. That we cant swallow no matter how hard we try.

Comment/commentaire by Brian B 01.17.06 @ 9:44 am

I voted for Scott Brison…in his first attempt to represent the riding.

At the time, I thought Mr. Brison would be a good M.P., and he was. The constiuents were view as loyal supporters of the Tories.

We all saw what Mr. Brison thought of the constituents who placed him in office.

Mr. Brison snubbed all who voted for him as a Tory and turned our Conservative votes into liberal (small caps intentional) votes.

I have never voted liberal in my life and I felt that what Mr. Brison did was a slap in my face.

I really don’t care what goes on in Mr. Brison’s personal life, according to the most obnoxious liberal of them all, what goes on in someone’s bedroom is not my business…I agree with that.

I can see where Mr. brison’s personal preferences conflicted with the merged Conservative party and I can understand him being uncomfortable with the merger.

My feeling is that if his person agenda was such that he could not work within the new party, then he could withdraw his services. Mr. Brison SHOULD have left to sit as an independant…that would be palatable.

But, as we have all seen…that did not happen. Mr. Brison took his vote and bought himself a liberal cabinet seat with my vote for him as a Conservative…that is dead wrong.

I believe that Mr. Brison will once again be elected in this riding….he will never get my vote…ever.

A majority Conservative vicory will look really good on Mr. Brison and Canad’a answer to Paris Hilton, Ms. Stronach, when they are sequestered in the invisible rows of the liberal caucus under the rule of a new liberal leader.

Best of luck Mr. Brison, you have KISSED MY VOTE AWAY.

Comment/commentaire by Fred J 01.17.06 @ 2:44 pm

Brison’s in real trouble here but I think he’ll win out at the end of the day. Liberal win

Comment/commentaire by Nick Boragina 01.17.06 @ 11:05 pm

In spite of the CeePee fondness for snatching defeat from the jaws of almost certain victory I expect the muzzle to stay on their scarier members – at least until Tuesday next – thereby preserving the meagre win that now seems likely. I note that Stephen, at his reassuring best, seems to be suggesting he will have no choice but to leave the bureaucracy in place. I wouldn’t count on that! But I do continue to count on Brison to repeat here. People are not unhappy with his performance and none of his opponents have sufficient political substance to carry the constituency. IMO.

Comment/commentaire by Cal McMillan 01.18.06 @ 9:46 am

Angry voters make committed voters.
Are voters more angry at Brisson or a Conservative
government?
This riding could be a sign of things to come.
I’ll be watching it closely from away.

Comment/commentaire by Bill 01.18.06 @ 7:35 pm

I really don’t care what goes on in Mr. Brison’s personal life, according to the most obnoxious liberal of them all, what goes on in someone’s bedroom is not my business…I agree with that.

Haha, I can’t believe you just said that. Pierre Trudeau was one of the greatest Canadians ever, and brought about the fundamental changes needed for us to evolve into the world-leading progressive nation that we are today. But hey, I guess even rednecks have Internet access now, huh? ;) I’ve long since moved away from apple country, but I would be voting for Scott in a heartbeat. I guess selective memory prevents you from remembering how Mr. Stockwell Day believes that you’re a lazy, welfare leeching good for nothing maritimer, huh?

Anyway, best of luck to Mr. Brison, and no disrespect to Dr. Mullan, who was my personal family doctor for more than 20 years. But he’s definitely flying the wrong flag for this one.

Comment/commentaire by Justin 01.19.06 @ 11:55 am

It is rare for floor crossers to hold onto a seat, and Brison proved that he could in 2004. However, those of you who say that Dr. Mullan is an angry man would do well to remember Mr. Brison’s “kiss my ass” comment. I really hope that on election day the good people of Kings Hants invite Brison to do the same.

Comment/commentaire by Rob 01.19.06 @ 12:58 pm

thanks Rob for suporting me.. Scott lied to the voters of kings Hants when he said I asked for my Job back.. I think he has a big problem. I had not worked at my position for 17 months as of SEPTEMBER, WHEN sCOTT TOLD ME TO ‘kiss his ass’ and I never asked for my job back. He also lied to the voter when he said Iwas belligernt, he came to our table THREE times, I did not go to his.WE NEED A MP WITH SOME CREDIBALITY AND ETHICS

Comment/commentaire by sandra 01.20.06 @ 4:09 pm

I have met Dr. Bob Mullan on many occasions and I feel he is the man for the job. Best of Luck to Bob taking Kings-Hants!

Comment/commentaire by Marge 01.20.06 @ 5:55 pm

Bob Mullan is a fine man who will represent Kings-Hants well. Bryson is not reflective of the values of the riding.

Comment/commentaire by Mike 01.21.06 @ 6:38 am

I wonder if any of Dr. Bob’s patients are at all concerned about where they will find replacement for the first rate medical service he now provides? I wonder if Dr. Bob is concerned? Do you suppose he might become Minister of Health? But relax. He’s not planning on winning anyway.

Comment/commentaire by CM 01.21.06 @ 7:41 am

“Bryson is not reflective of the values of the riding.”
What do you mean by that Mike?

Comment/commentaire by islander 01.21.06 @ 10:13 am

Justin; Trudeau was a great Canadian to you and others but out here (Alberta) the man was a symbol of what was wrong with this country. A man who only had time for those who lived east of Manitoba AND, to be frank, didn’t have any maritime accents. He didn’t understand us, didn’t try to and never showed had any interest in doing so. I think a lot of people could argue that in Atlantic Canada as well. Apparently to you, that makes him a ‘Great Canadian’. However it is easy to see what you bring to the table with your comment about how rednecks now have internet access. I take it you seem to have that typical liberal attitude that you know what’s best for everyone, and if they don’t agree, they’re either stupid rednecks or lunatics. It’s because of that type of ‘World leading progessive’ thought exhibited by Trudeau and carried on by people like you that the Liberals are going extinct in Alberta once again, and if there is any justice, the people of Kings-Hants will have someone who they can be sure will represent all of them all of the time, and not just use it as a jumping board to further one’s career. By the way, I live in David Kilgours Edmonton riding (PC, then Liberal, then Independent) and although I didn’t like what he did, he never did it to get into cabinet. Too bad Scott and Belinda didn’t have quite the same respect for their constituents.

Comment/commentaire by ryk 01.21.06 @ 1:53 pm

I could see why people think Belinda was an opportunist, but Scott isn’t. Scott, believed in moderate values, he did not get a cabinet post! he got a parliamentary secretary job. He’s going to win because he’s a man of principle not power.

Comment/commentaire by Jack 01.21.06 @ 5:04 pm

what surprises me is all of the talk of opportunism (Belinda, Brison) but to me, the Reform/Alliance/Conservative merge REEKS of opportunism. The old Conservatives could not get back on their feet after 1993 and the only way for them to ever gain power was to do the nasty with the reformists.

Comment/commentaire by islander 01.21.06 @ 6:19 pm

I wonder if Brison will contravene the elections act and use he victory speech to call everyone else in the country a red-neck if they vote anything but Liberal. Outside of Nova Scotia Brison is easily the most hated politician in the country. A man who one day stated that Paul Martin was woefully corrupt, and the next day became Paul Martin’s defender in the House of Commons … Brison is a hired gun, with few principles.

Comment/commentaire by Waheed Singh 01.21.06 @ 7:43 pm

I cannot forget the arrogance of this little twerp as he stood in the HofC day after day lying about the Libs involvement in the biggest scandal to ever hit the Canadian Government.

Further, I cannot believe that anyone with integrity would continue to vote for the proven thugs, liars, and thieves who currently run the Liberal Party of Canada.

Any candidate with principles would have long since refused to allow his name and reputation to be associated with such a bunch of scoundrels.

Comment/commentaire by Laura Lee 01.21.06 @ 8:37 pm

I do believe Scott will win the riding tomorrow.

Comment/commentaire by A 01.22.06 @ 9:07 am

“Haha, I can’t believe you just said that. Pierre Trudeau was one of the greatest Canadians ever, and brought about the fundamental changes needed for us to evolve into the world-leading progressive nation that we are today. But hey, I guess even rednecks have Internet access now, huh?”

The benefit of living in this country that we are all entitled to our views. None 100% correct, or wrong.

I guess that if demanding integrity from your M.P. makes me a “Redneck”, then I may fit into your view of a redneck.

If you would have read further, I agreed with the former P.M., which you place on such a pedestal.

There are many in this country who do not agree with your glamorization of P.E.T.. We are paying huge bills for some of the policies, which the arrogant Mr. Trudeau forced upon the citizens of this country.

Our children and their children will continue to be saddled with Mr. Trueadu’s expensive tastes.

It’s a fortunate position, which Mr. Trudeau found himself. Being a multi-millionaire, he could afford to be a socialist with champagne tastes.

But I digress; we are in debate about the current not the past.

The constituents in the riding of Hants West should be demanding accountability of Mr. Brison for his sale of our votes for a cabinet position within a corrupt Liberal government.

As mentioned many times, the sale of cabinet positions was common with the last couple of years. Both Mr. Brison and Ms. Stronach were quick to “feather their own beds” without any regard to the concerns and desires of their constituents.

Mr. Brison, as a Tory was very vocal in his contempt of both the Chretien and Martin governments and the corruption and arrogance within the Liberal party.

At the first opportunity to elevate his personal position with the “sale” of the constituents of Hants West, Mr. Brison sold us out, lock, stock, and barrel.

As the polls now stand, Mr. Brison will win re-election in Hants West that will be a shame. The only way that we, the constituents of Hants West can show our disgust for the Liberal corruption of the past 12 years as well as the turncoat antics of Mr. Brison is to vote in force against the current government and representation in our riding.

Strategic voting by the NDP vote will accomplish the ouster of Mr. Brison.

Hopefully, late Monday evening we will see that the joined forces of the Conservative votes and NDP votes who will demand change will force Mr. Brison out of the riding and on to other challenges.

Have the NDP’ers who are reading these comments had enough of Mr. Brison and the Liberals?

In Hants West, an NDP vote will once again place Mr. Brison in Parliament, this time on the other side of the house.

Wouldn’t a return to Tory blue, on the government side of the house be better than having a muted backbencher in opposition?

My choice has been made, has yours?

Comment/commentaire by Fred J 01.22.06 @ 10:38 am

My mistake.

The reference should have been Kings Hants when refering to the riding in my latest post.

Comment/commentaire by Fred J 01.22.06 @ 10:55 am

Hey Conservatives, look at the bright side! Even if Scott Brison and Belinda win their ridings tomorrow, they’ll be catapulted back to the opposition benches (again) as well as no more chauffeur – they’ll have to schlepp themselves from now on. Oh, yeah, no more syncophantic ministerial staff either.

Comment/commentaire by Richard Pearson 01.22.06 @ 11:43 am

I think it’s importat for people to have a look at brison and say, “do i want him speaking for me in Ottawa.”

Comment/commentaire by rob 01.22.06 @ 1:34 pm

The last time Mr. Brison was running he was quick to answer questions but after he was elected again he did not respond nor even return a phone call. Not even a hugh issue either. He showed a lot of promise but he did not follow through….Still undecided….Like the central programs of the grits but the personal commitment does not seem to be there…Don’t know

Kings-Hants: We’ll see tomorrow

Comment/commentaire by Mike 01.22.06 @ 10:07 pm

I hope most of my fellow NDP-minded folks know that whether or not they are even considering a strategic vote, the next best thing to an NDP victory is, in fact, a Liberal victory. The Conservatives’ position on most issues couldn’t be farther away from the NDP. Not only that, but a Conservative majority government would mean they wouldn’t be kept in check by the other parties…scary stuff to any NDP OR Liberal supporter. To me, which specific MP to elect takes a back seat to making sure the NDP actually has a say in Ottawa.
