PREDICTED WINNER LPC Mark Holland

Comment:
This one should be a Conservative pick-up given the tendency in the 905 East region, but a lot of voters may be reluctant to support Thomas due to his vocal and controversial positions on abortion and gay marriage. There have been suggestions that Thomas stacked the nomination meeting with his supporters, to the shagrin of some moderate Conservatives in the riding. I would be surprised if Thomas was able to pull this one out.

If Rondo Thomas could stick to local issues and rather than refight the Reformation, the CPC would have a chance here. Message to CPC HQ: Put a muzzle on this guy for the next two weeks.

the liberals will win by a small margin

Comment/commentaire by matt casselman 01.14.06 @ 6:23 am

You’re kidding me right? Rondo is a few points ahead of Mark? This Tory candidate was caught on tape saying that same sex marriages represented war between the righteous and the sinners. If that’s not grounds for getting the hell away from this evangelical hick, then I don’t know what is.

On Jan 23, people of Ajax-Pickering, vote for a competent hard working MP in Mark Holland, please! It’s for your own good.

Comment/commentaire by Pinball Wizard 01.16.06 @ 1:21 am

Give me a break..vote for a Fiberal again, wake up Ajax-Pickering, join the rest of the people in Ontario (who are not sheep being lead by their noses) and Canada who think through all the jargon and vote for change and a Conservative government.

Comment/commentaire by John Hillman 01.16.06 @ 2:40 am

Ok , i really think the same-sex issue is done, even though 70 % of Canadians are against it anyway. I got no problem with 2 men or 2 women loving each other, but don’t start calling getting off with your best friend a marriage. ( You can see where I like many canadians stand on this issue, and I don’t beleive in God , either )

The main issue is to get rid of the stinkin crooked liberals, so vote NDP or conservative

Comment/commentaire by Terra 01.16.06 @ 8:31 am

Rondo Thomas is typical of the Christian right. They pretend to represent a moral view but what they are really about is THEIR moral view and that means what they are really about is CONTROL. Not to mention hatred, division and intolerance. They are just like the Republican freak show to the South. PLEASE Ajax, don’t vote in a man who thinks the earth is only 6000 years old! These people need to be discouraged from even thinking about politics.

Comment/commentaire by Joel Parkes 01.16.06 @ 3:44 pm

Mr Thomas filled the nomination meeting with his congregation – and this congregation is nowhere to be found on the ground trying to get him elected. He subverted the democratic process to bring himself in as the Conservative candidate. Jim Flaherty was there too – when they announced Mr. Thomas’s win, Mr Flaherty grimaced.

The ultimate problem with Mr. Thomas is he’s a one issue horse. Same-sex marriage is preoccupying his mind to the exclusion of other issues. Who cares about accountability, financial responsibility, and fiscal imbalances, as long as the gays and lesbians aren’t allowed to marry.

As much as I want a Conservative national victory, I do not want Rondo Thomas in Ottawa. He does not represent my balanced conservative view.

In Ajax-Pickering, vote for Mr. Holland, Mr. Modeste, or Mr. Korus.

It won’t impact the national vote, and it will send Mr. Thomas back to the stone age, so the next election – we get a better Conservative voice in Ajax/Pickering.

Comment/commentaire by Ajax Tory 01.16.06 @ 9:00 pm

The same sex issue is only an issue to people who are not going to vote conservative anyways. Given that most of the local liberals are just as far over to the right on social issues I can’t see the conservatives finishing worse where than in Pickering-Scarborough.

Comment/commentaire by andy m 01.17.06 @ 6:00 am

I’m a Tory – and not even I could vote for Rondo the Magnificent! I hope Harper Wins a Majority – and I hope that it is without this guy

Comment/commentaire by MVW 01.17.06 @ 5:57 pm

Conservative tax cuts do not benefit the homeless, unemployed, and those individuals who are on welfare. Giving a 1,200 a year tax credit for those parents with young children does not benefit unemployed and welfare dependent parents. You have to be making taxable income to be eligible for tax cuts and tax credits. Conservatives don’t believe in social assistance programs. Stephen Harper does not know the meaning of social responsibility. Vote the lesser evil! Vote Liberal!

Comment/commentaire by Sheldon 01.17.06 @ 12:14 pm

Rondo’s a nut.
Conservatives will still win.
Might as well paint all of Durham blue.
Oda, Thomas, Flaherty.

Comment/commentaire by Patrick Johnston 01.17.06 @ 7:35 pm

It is an absolute miracle that Wild Rondo Thomas has not got the Tories negative national attention. The Tories can thank God (or whomever else they see fit) for the miracle of Wild Rondo’s silence. After the Jan 23, Rondo can say whatever he wants. Go nuts.

Comment/commentaire by david gates 01.18.06 @ 11:47 am

Rondo Thomas is an intolerant NUT. Vote for anyone but him. I spoke to him at my door and his views are scary. Mark Holland deserves another term despite his party and its sins.

Comment/commentaire by Bill Allister 01.18.06 @ 1:20 pm

In a recent national poll on CBC ( november 2005) a majority of Canadians expressed the belief that homosexual acts are immoral. Up to 70% ( 2005 and 2004 Compas polls) of Canadians opposed changing the definition of marriage ( although half of them supported civil unions)This is the conservative position. There is nothing radical about it. What is truly scary is the intolerance shown by liberals towards people of faith. Only secular liberal opinion is allowed in Canada, even though millions of Canadians are active in conservative religious movements. A religious person expressing a mainstream view on marriage should not be condemned as “trying to force his morality on others”. Most laws are based on some form of morality and religious people have played a central role in Canadian history. Why isnt Mark Holland being condemned for supported abortion on demand up until birth( a minority view) for supporting ssm ( a minority view) and for refusing to support raising the age of consent(with youth exception) from 14-16, something that the vast majority of Canadians support, but some of the more radical gay rights groups oppose. Mark Holland isnt comdmened for forcing his far left views on us.

I had the unfortunate opportunity to meet Rondo Thomas and all I can say ia that I sure am glad he is with the Conservatives. This guy is an embarrasment. Obviously by the tone of my comment I don’t support Harper and his cronies, but you have to seriously wonder how somebody like Thomas ever got this far in the party. It is my understanding that the leaders of the respective parties must sign their approval for each respective candidates actual nomination. With that being said what does that say about Harper’s leadership abilities approving this idiot. Then again they say the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree and in time we will all see that Harper truly is not a changed man.

Comment/commentaire by Elio 01.18.06 @ 5:49 pm

I hate the Liberal Party, and Rondo Thomas is so scary and so dangerous to a free and secular society that this is one of the only two ridings (two other being Richmond, where incumbent Raymond Chan faces against former Fascists on the Family President Darrel Reid) in Canada where I can see myself voting Liberal instead of NDP or (If the BQ candidate is a leftist in a tight race with either the Fibranos or the Conservatwits) BQ.

Comment/commentaire by Josh Frappier 01.18.06 @ 10:29 pm

All the coments focusing on SSM are nonsensical, cite completely inaccurate survey results (a majority of canadians “believe homosexual acts are immoral”? please), and miss the point. The point is not whether you do or do not support SSM or abortion or whatever. The point is what kind of MP you want. Do you want a young, engaged MP, who’s been a member of the civil community in Ajax-Pickering for years, who engages the community, holds regular town halls, and who actually cares about the people of Ajax-Pickering? Or do you want an old man who has no interest in Ajax-Pickering beyond the doors of its churches, who has had no involvement in the politics and civil life of Ajax-Pickering, and who thinks that the laws of God trump the laws of men? Do you think Thomas actually cares about Jews, or women, or anyone who isn’t a fundamentalist christian? He’ll be like those Bloc MPs who refuse to hand out Canadian flags – come to Thomas with a concern, and unless it has to do with God or Gay Rights, chances are you’ll never be heard.

Believe what you want in Canada, worship whom you want, but remember that Canada is a secular, tolerant, diverse society. If you are christian, think about what it would be like for you to live in a majority muslim or jewish or hindu society. Would you want the person who represents you in parliament to say that the laws of Allah or JHVH or Kali are more important than your secular laws?

Comment/commentaire by Brad Parr 01.19.06 @ 9:01 am

Quite the list but it is not fair to only list the negative.Doubtless the negative list would be long if the Mulroney years were also listed. The fact is Conservatives and Liberals are indistingishable except minor policy differences(despite what they may say). The real choice is in a different kind of governement that caters much less to the power elite who only care for profit but those that value integrity, honour, fairness etc..Greed exists but it does not need to be front and centre above our other human traits. If we don’t wake up soon, it will be too late…

Comment/commentaire by Neil 01.19.06 @ 7:37 pm

There are many issues and two of the issues that the liberals continue to bring up over and over are same sex marriage and abortion. Paul Martin now talks about those issues daily. They are important issues to some voters. A 2003 SES national poll found that 60% of those opposed to ssm would vote against their mp if he/she were for ssm. 32% of pro ssm would vote against their anti-ssm mp. As for the morality of homosexuality issue. It wasnt a strong majority..only 52% and it only refered to homosexual acts not orientation. The polls are correct. The media does not always reflect the conservatism of Canadians.
It is funny how a person who claims to stand for a tolerant country would preach such bigotry as Brad. . To suggest without any evidence that Thomas, because he is a Christian, is anti-jewish and as anti-Canada as a Bloc Mp is beyond the pale and odd since conservative christians are the most pro-jewish Canadians today. Brad’s comments are also ignorant of our own laws. Canada does not actually have a separation of church and state so it is not actually officially secular. We have and continue to fund Catholic schools and our own charter of rights begins with “Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law” And one finaly point should be made. Those who support social conservatism come from every background. Muslims, Hindus, Orthodox Jews, practicing Catholics etc.. That some conservatives defend such values is why there is a movement of them towards the conservative party nationally, the party with the most diverse members of parliament.

I agree with the comment below regarding this nomination being ‘highjacked’ by a large group of instant members. There were 2 very good ‘mainstream’ candidates in Rene Soetens and Rick Johnson who could have won this time given the swing to Conservatives. Talking about ‘war’ on social issues simply turns people off and is neither reasonable nor democratic.

Comment/commentaire by D. Lacey 01.21.06 @ 8:38 am

Truly an a needless loss for the CPC. Rondo got hsi church members to show up to vote him in as CPC candidate. That is fine if they would have followed through and worked on his campaign but they did not. Rnee Soetens had a very respectable image and could have won. Rondo comes accross like a maniac and will lose.

Comment/commentaire by david gates 01.22.06 @ 11:58 am

The Tories could have taken this but they foolishly went with Rondo. Great candidate for say, Oklahoma. But not for the GTA. His religious right connections have been prominent enough (unlike “moderate” bigots like Bev Oda who quietly votes against SSM but doesn’t declare a holy war on gays and lesbians) to scare away voters who mainly care about the national campaign and don’t pay much attention to the local race.

Comment/commentaire by Nicky Numbers 01.22.06 @ 3:31 pm

It’s good to see so many Conservatives on this blog distance themselves from Rondo. I am a firm believer in the notion that all the parties have their good and bad people and it sure looks like Rondo was the wrong choice here. It shows depth of character in Conservative followers to reject this guy.

Comment/commentaire by Joel Parkes 01.22.06 @ 4:11 pm

My final comment on this one for the record is that I do not think Rondo is bigotted. Many fundamentalist Christians are very pro Israel so there is no way he is anti semetic. He might have been sellable in a different riding as he is. He would need to have had an image makeover to be sellable in Ajax-Pickering. Next time run Soetens and save yourself alot of grief.

Comment/commentaire by david gates 01.22.06 @ 8:41 pm

last comment: most retarded comment ever

So someone is pro-Israeli, that could mean he’s anti-Arab. Maybe he’s anti alot of things. And if you’ve seen the clip online of him in full swing gay bashing, you’ll see that he’s anti-gay. I wonder where the bigotry stops with this guy. Anyone who votes for him is ignorant, retarded or are themselves bigoted.

Comment/commentaire by Dave 01.22.06 @ 9:07 pm

Why is Rondo..scary, but Liberal MP Dan McTeague of Pickering-Scarborough East and Liberal mp Judi Longfield of Whitby-Oshawa ( formerly whitby-ajax) are not. They’re both anti-abortion and against gay marriage. McTeague has spoken at many pro life rallies. In May, 2005 at a big rally with 6,000 on parliament hill.

Comment/commentaire by john 01.22.06 @ 9:15 pm

Hey Dave, I did not say I support him so relax. Image is important however. Rondo presented the image of a fanatic who rails against gays. It is a miracle he did not sink the CPC campaign.
