Traditionally I vote NDP, but this time, like many in my small complex here, we are voting Conservative. Raminder Gill is well known here and he is fighting a good campaign. I have run into him twice already in the riding. No luck yet with the Khan group. I have received nothing in my door, they have few signs out, and they seem to have half the volunteers coming out each night as compared to the Conservatives (Both offices are just down the road from me).

Despite the fact that Khan was seen in the riding a fair amount, and had a few meetings and functions over the last year, I think it is irrelevant. With the notion that the Conservatives are a scary ultra-rightwing Western party no longer has credence. Finally, there is a second national party.

Last time I reluctantly voted for Khan, just to hold the party line. This time I’m fed up with the party’s refusal to change politics for the better. Real tax cuts, electoral reform, and and true accountability. But I’m not going to vote Conservative just b/c Harper’s less scary, although I do think when they win it won’t be bad for Canada. I am voting for the Green’s however, and Otto Cassanova. Who despite not having a chance at winning this seat, is still campaigning hard and spreading the message that he believes in. A vote for the greens isn’t just a vote, its also a donation, one that this party won’t waste on attack ads, but on building for our future.

Alvin,

Take a deep look at the Green Party. Most of the people at the top levels of the party have quit. There are a lot of questions about where the money has been going. You might be better off voting NDP. The Canadian Greens are a long way from the European Greens.

I hope that this riding goes conservative because its better that we have an M.P. on the government side of the house. The Liberals need a good decade in opposition. We need CHANGE.

I voted for Wajid Khan because he has demonstrated to me for the past 17 months that he is a strong advocate for Mississauga. If by some chance Gill gets elected, it’s because of Stephen Harper’s coattails and all he would be is a Harper yes man for Ottawa to Mississauga.

Comment/commentaire by Pinball Wizard 01.17.06 @ 4:02 am

BTW, I truly believe Wajid will win this riding. But as for the Liberal Party, I think a good decade in opposition will allow the chance for the party to rebuild itself and figure out what it stands for.

Paul Martin’s desire to implement change was hindered by the old guard of the Liberal Party, who value staying in power or in office more than renewal. In order for real change, the Liberals have to realize that they’re not invincible, and a defeat at the polls will show us that. Then the task of rebuilding can begin.

khan is an arrogant egomaniac parachuted in by pm pm last time around. get him out of here! mcguinty didn’t want him in 2003…

Comment/commentaire by Jerome 01.17.06 @ 2:28 pm

I’m not sure what you mean by Khan being a strong advocate for Mississauga. For his first 6 months in office he had an unlisted phone number, he still does not live in this riding. Only one of the candidates has lived and been involved in Mississauga-Streetsville for a significant ammount of time, and that is Jim Caron who has lived here for 30 years!

Comment/commentaire by Craig 01.18.06 @ 2:07 pm

Streetsville has the best of the available candidates in Khan. This was proved once again in the candidate debates on the local Rogers cable chanel.

Comment/commentaire by David Miller 01.18.06 @ 3:16 pm

Between the choice of a seemingly absent Raminder Gill and an over the top rhetoric candidate like Caron, I still pick Wajid Khan.

Comment/commentaire by Pinball Wizard 01.18.06 @ 3:36 pm

“an over the top rhetoric candidate like Caron”

could you elaborate?

Comment/commentaire by Craig 01.18.06 @ 9:36 pm

I am a traditional Liberal guy, but this time I think Liberals need to be shown the exit sign so that they could get in touch with real world.

Comment/commentaire by Arun 01.19.06 @ 11:40 am

To clarify for Craig, Caron speaks as though there is a permanent TV camera on him all the time. I understand where he’s coming from, but from the way he communicates his ideas gives off the perception that he’s only interested in a good sound byte, and blaming the government or lambasting the Conservatives without offering specifically what the NDP would do.

I just came back from an all candidates debate, and that’s what Caron sounded like.

Comment/commentaire by Pinball Wizard 01.19.06 @ 8:04 pm

I gave the Liberals my vote last time, and Khan is not a good result. Gill will be a breath of fresh air for this riding. I will vote Conservative this time.

Comment/commentaire by Lutful 01.20.06 @ 8:45 am

Get rid of Khan and his Liberal cronies! In my opinion, this guy had a chance and he is less than useless. He was parachuted into the riding (how democratic is that!) and has nothing to offer to most people in terms of representation. I don’t see him as a great thinker either. You would have to have a very strong Liberal candidate to get me to vote Liberal again in this riding. I hope that most folks who voted Liberal last time will join me in walking over and supporting the Conservatives this time…let’s give them a chance.

Comment/commentaire by Former Liberal 01.21.06 @ 12:39 pm

I agree we should give the Tories a chance at government, so we can see how quickly they screw up in office. But I believe locally Wajid Khan is a better MP than Raminder Gill could be. The only shot Gill has taken at the incumbent is the fact that he has not moved into the riding as he promised in the last election. Mr. Khan has brought this up and already has a property in the city and is planning to move in. You can’t expect a person to snap his fingers and suddenly become a resident.

I’ve gone canvassing with Mr. Khan severly times, and all I’ve heard is positive reaction and Liberal supporters. Some undecided or Conservative were even eventually convinced to changed their vote to Liberal.

As for policy differences, Gill can’t use the gay marriage thing against Khan, because Mr. Khan voted to keep the traditional definition of marriage, against his government’s wishes. In the past 17 months he has brought 10 cabinet ministers into the riding to talk to constituents about their concerns. Mr. Gill calls these photo ops; I call them democratic dialogue. Mr. Gill also offers no positive alternatives to issues. During a debate I posed the question of post secondary education to all candidates, and Gill responded by saying the money was wasted in HRDC, in the Gun Registry, and whatever scandal his puny mind could come up with. He brought up how the Conservatives were going to help students by giving them a tax cut in textbooks. How’s that going to help me study and learn from my classes and make sure that I can still afford going to school. I can’t bribe my professors, now can I?

So on January 23, fellow residents of Mississauga-Streetsville, look for someone who won’t suck up to Stephen Harper and not hold them accountable if they win power. CHOSE WAJID KHAN BECAUSE WAJID KHAN WORKS FOR MISSISSAUGA!!

Comment/commentaire by Pinball Wizard 01.21.06 @ 4:53 pm

Mississauga will go completely Liberal. Wajid is a well respected member of the community and will be re-elected by a wide margin.

Comment/commentaire by Randy 01.21.06 @ 7:39 pm

It’s really sad how arrogant the Liberals have really become. They think that no one else should have the right to govern. The last fellow is a prime example. He’s obviously a Liberal campaign worker who keeps discrediting every other candidate except his own. It’s also obvious that the quality of local candidates for this riding is very poor. I watched the all-candidates debate on TV and it was a pathetic spectacle. Whoever wins will keep the back-benches warm (assuming they show up to Parliament) - folks, we have no cabinet material here for sure. Having said this, since the Conservatives are on their way to victory nationally, it only makes sense to send a Conservative from this riding.

Comment/commentaire by Mitchell 01.21.06 @ 8:09 pm

Yes, I happen to be a campaign worker for Wajid Khan. I’m also a political junkie who pays attention to the other candidates, I read their platforms and checked their websites to see how credible they are as alternatives. To Mitchell, I say this, speaking as a CANADIAN VOTER, Mr. Khan is still the best from among the 5 candidates whom the Mississauga News dubbed “the whole bad lot.” I don’t agree with every single thing Mr. Khan advocates for, such as his stance on same sex marriage and tax policy, but I’ve seen his work as a constituency man and it’s stellar. Raminder Gill, Jim Caron, or even Otto Casanova have never delivered any literature to my door or canvassed my area.

As for that crack about back benchers not showing up to Parliament. Mr. Khan spends 5 days per week in Ottawa, and 2 days in the riding. In fact, there were complains that he was not visible enough in Mississauga (during the time he was in Ottawa).

Comment/commentaire by Pinball Wizard 01.22.06 @ 4:45 pm

I’m a senior citizen, life long Liberal. Having said that I’m hoping & predicting a Consevative minority. However I will still cast my vote for the Liberals. Call it statregic voteing, to hold the Consevatives to a minority.

Comment/commentaire by Oliver 01.23.06 @ 5:29 am

I vote Liberal. Not this time. I am voting for Raminder because the Liberal party does not help people. They help themselves. I voted Conservative in advance polling for one reason. Raminder, as a private citizen did more for me in time, guidance, and direction than Mr Khan did. Change, I am hoping will be good for all the parties, and for Canada. The Libs need to take a page out of the Conservative handbook and open their ears to their constituents and LISTEN.

Comment/commentaire by Michael 01.23.06 @ 5:39 am

I saw the candidates debate and thought Khan probably did better that the others, although for the most part he repeated the same party line as Martin himself. If Jim Caron had even a remote chance of getting elected, I would definitely throw my vote his way as I am an NDPer at heart (like probably 50% of the population of Canada). That not being the case, I think it is always best to have an MP who is in the ruling party. Therefore Gill is my man and will get my vote tonight.

Comment/commentaire by Brad 01.23.06 @ 12:35 pm

I voted Liberal last time. What a MISTAKE. Don’t fall for them. I see them as OPPORTUNISTS. Now I’m voting for Gill. Conservatives have some very good people running this time and will form a government that reflects what people want. Less wastage of tax payers’ money is important to me and the Liberals will keep squandering money. I hear Gill lives in the riding and is a long time resident of Mississauga. From reading comments by other users not only does Khan not live in the riding, he doesn’t even live in Mississauga - you decide.

Comment/commentaire by Jennifer 01.23.06 @ 1:06 pm

Three times looser Raminder Gill has lost again. Do you know why? Because he is a repeated looser. He has lost in Bramalea Gore Malton riding repeatedly and now he kept his loosing spree going on again Mississauga Streetsvile riding. Well done Mr. Gill. Next time go to Oakville to loose again.

Comment/commentaire by Mississauga Voters 01.23.06 @ 10:23 pm

Stupid residents of Mississauga. Voting in a guy who doesn’t even live here? DUH. No voice in the Federal government now.

Comment/commentaire by Rad 01.24.06 @ 10:06 am

Mississauga Voters are very wise and very much in control just like all other voters in all of the GTA. Voters in this region do not get effected by false allegations and negative propaganda. It is not the fault of the Mississauga Voters that Conservative Party keeps brining back the losers on the ballot. First they have Nina Tangri who just had completed her nice three times loosing in the same riding. Now they brought this repeated looser Raminder Gill who is not even sure himself if he was a conservative or a liberal because he once even sought Liberal nomination and was defeated during the nomination then he had lost repeatedly running in Bramalea-Gore-Malton riding. What would we voters of Mississauga do if conservatives keep brining a looser on their ballot? It is not fault of the Mississauga voters; it is the fault of the conservative choosers who need to know how to bring a winning candidate. This is an advice to conservatives that please please do not bring one of these loosers back in next provincial elections.

Comment/commentaire by Mississauga Voters 01.24.06 @ 5:23 pm

Rad’s an idiot, calling Mississauga voters stupid. Electing a Conservative would have only meant a subservient voice to the Harperites who have no plans for the growing importance of urban issues. Keeping Mississauga Liberals in Ottawa will hold the Conservatives’ feet to the fire. Let’s see how annoying pricks like Jason Kenney and Diane Ablonczy fare as government ministers, taking the heat from the Opposition (namely us).

Comment/commentaire by Pinball Wizard 01.28.06 @ 10:44 am

And for Mississauga Voters’ last comment about Raminder Gill: AMEN, BROTHER!!

Comment/commentaire by Pinball Wizard 01.28.06 @ 10:45 am

The newspapers and this website may have listed this riding as prime Conservative territory, but that only depends on who the candidate they run here is. Nina Tangri and Raminder Gill have things in common more than just being Indian. They’re both multiple time losers (loser is spelled with only one l, BTW to Mississauga Voters). They lost provincially and federally (Gill seems to jump back and forth between ridings, so I don’t know what his story is). Another common problem was their focus on the single issue of Wajid Khan not being a resident of the riding. FOR THE LAST F’N TIME, I DON’T CARE, A LOT OF PEOPLE I CANVASSED DIDN’T CARE, DO ANY OF YOU CARE?

To the Conservatives in Mississauga, get your heads out of your asses and start focusing on the priorities of this city and this community, and don’t just follow the national HQ playbook.

Comment/commentaire by Pinball Wizard 01.30.06 @ 3:36 pm

Since Wajid Khan has crossed the floor to the Conservative before 2007 barely began, I would like to retract my previous statement and instead put this in: Khan is a double crossing, self serving, cynical asshole who deserves to be tossed out on his ass for lying to the voters. PLAIN and SIMPLE
